Belfast Council Committee Blocks Irish Street Signs in East Belfast
A Belfast City Council committee voted against installing Irish language street signs on two east Belfast streets. The People and Communities Committee decision affects Stormont Park and Onslow Gardens.
The chair's casting vote blocked signs reading Pairc Chnoc an Anfa for Stormont Park and Gairdini Onslow for Onslow Gardens. The committee made this decision after two-thirds of residents on one street indicated opposition.
Sinn Fein sought to approve the signs but the committee deadlocked. The full council will ratify the committee's decision at its meeting on April 1, 2026.
A letter to the editor predicts the full council vote will overturn the block. The writer expects Sinn Fein, SDLP, Green Party and People Before Profit to secure enough votes for the signs.
