Derry City and Strabane Mayor Announces Hyrox Simulation Event in Strabane
Councillor Ruairí McHugh, Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, will host the district's first Hyrox simulation event on Saturday, May 30, at the Melvin Sports Complex in Strabane.
The event, named MAYOR-ROX, partners the mayor with Vincent Sweeney of Maiden City Games. It serves as a fundraiser for PIPS Suicide Prevention Ireland Charity and the Castlederg Patient Comfort and Terminally Ill Fund, the mayor's selected charities for his term.
Hyrox involves running combined with functional workout stations to test endurance, strength, and running ability. Participants register as solo entrants or relay teams of two, three, or four, with a Half-Rox option available. A minimum £50 donation per participant applies, and further fundraising is encouraged.
The all-day competition uses chip timing, divides entrants into categories, and awards winners in each. Every participant receives a commemorative T-shirt. Registration opened at www.derrystrabane.com/mayorrox, which includes safety rules and a code of conduct.
The launch occurred at the Melvin Sports Complex, which is receiving a £3.2 million upgrade. Organizers assign start times after allocating entries to categories.
PIPS Suicide Prevention Ireland Charity offers free confidential counselling, a crisis walk-in centre in Belfast, and telephone support at regional hubs for those affected by suicide, self-harm, or poor mental health.
The Castlederg Patient Comfort and Terminally Ill Fund provides equipment, transport, and complementary services to people with chronic or terminal illnesses in the Castlederg area, along with temporary accommodation support near hospitals.
