Ulster Hospital UVB Phototherapy Aids Psoriasis and Eczema Patients
The Ulster Hospital in Northern Ireland operates a UVB phototherapy service for dermatology patients. The service delivers controlled ultraviolet B light to treat psoriasis, eczema, and other inflammatory skin conditions.
Claire Batten from Bangor started treatment in January after a psoriasis diagnosis ten years prior. She attends the Dermatology Hub three times a week for several weeks under a personalised plan supervised by medical staff.
Batten reported initial frustration from managing the condition with creams. After treatment, she noted skin improvement and increased confidence, including comfort showing skin on holiday.
Staff Nurse Claire Keenan oversees the service. Patients typically complete around seven weeks of sessions. Keenan stated that staff monitor progress closely and support emotional needs during treatment.
The unit ensures patient privacy. Dermatology specialists advise against sunbeds for skin conditions due to risks of damage and cancer.
Batten's brother also received UVB phototherapy for psoriasis.
