Respiratory and Sleep Physiologists at the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust marked Healthcare Science Week by explaining the science of breathing. The team, based at Ulster Hospital, conducts specialist tests for respiratory conditions.

The physiologists perform lung function testing in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. They measure lung volumes and assess oxygen transfer into the blood through breathing tests. The work supports diagnosis and management of conditions including Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea affects breathing during sleep in adults and children. The condition requires diagnosis and treatment to avoid seriousness. Physiologists provide Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machines, which deliver air through a mask to keep airways open at night.

Coral Trainor, a Respiratory Physiologist with the South Eastern Trust, stated that the tests help understand patient lung capacity. She noted the team handles a rising number of sleep apnoea cases.

Trainor described the role as rewarding due to visible patient progress from treatments. Hope McBride, a Respiratory Physiologist student from Ulster University, said the career blends science with patient interaction to guide diagnosis and treatment.

McBride encouraged those interested in science and people-facing work to pursue Healthcare Science paths. The efforts aim to inspire future careers in the field and recognize contributions to patient care.
