Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council will award the Freedom of the Borough to Hannah Scott MBE. The ceremony takes place at Coleraine Town Hall on Saturday 18 April 2026 at 11.30am.

The honour recognises Scott's Olympic gold medal in the Women's Quadruple Sculls for Team GB at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Ald Yvonne Boyle proposed the motion, which Cllr Amy Mairs seconded. Council approved it unanimously at a meeting earlier this year.

Councillor Oliver McMullan, Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, noted Scott grew up in Coleraine. He described her as the second woman from Northern Ireland to win Olympic gold, after Mary Peters in 1972. McMullan called the award suitable recognition of her success and role as an example for young people, particularly women and girls in the area.

The timing aligns with events leading to International Women's Day. Scott expressed pleasure at the recognition from her local council. She highlighted growing up in Coleraine and the value of role models there. Scott aims to encourage young people to pursue goals through effort and self-belief.
