Causeway Coast and Glens Council Schedules April Ceremony for Hannah Scott's Freedom of the Borough
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council will present the Freedom of the Borough to Olympic gold medallist Hannah Scott at 11.30am on Saturday, April 18, at Coleraine Town Hall. The award acknowledges her gold medal in the women’s quadruple sculls for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Hannah Scott comes from Coleraine. Council members approved the award unanimously at a special meeting in January. Alliance councillor Yvonne Boyle proposed the motion, and councillor Amy Mairs seconded it.
Mayor Oliver McMullan noted that Scott is the second woman from Northern Ireland to win Olympic gold, following Mary Peters in 1972. A report to the council’s Commemoration and Celebration Sub Committee stated that Scott has been notified and informally accepted the award.
At the same January meeting, council members also approved the Freedom of the Borough for the Northern Ireland Prison Service. No date has been set for that ceremony.
