Requiem Mass held for young Derry man following accident
A Requiem Mass for a young man named Daniel from Shantallow, Derry, took place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Steelstown. The funeral procession moved from the family home, joined by family, friends, neighbours and the community. Pupils from Steelstown Primary School and St Brigid's College, Carnhill, formed a guard of honour.
Fr Declan McGeehan addressed the congregation, noting they gathered in grief but united in support for Daniel's family. He mentioned prayers for Daniel's parents John and Sharon, siblings Bridie, Doniella, Joe and twin brother John Paul, grandparents, girlfriend Sophie, friends and young Caoimhin. The large attendance at the wake and Mass, concelebrated by Monsignor Joseph Donnelly, reflected the high regard for Daniel.
In his homily, Fr McGeehan recalled the shock following Tuesday night's accident. He described Daniel as outgoing, extroverted and sociable from a young age, popular at school and among family. Daniel enjoyed banter, charmed others and aspired to become a mechanic due to his interest in how things worked.
The priest highlighted Daniel's role in the family as caring, helpful and loyal, always ready to assist siblings, parents and grandparents. He noted Daniel's style and charisma, which lit up gatherings. Fr McGeehan emphasised that faith focuses on love rather than circumstances of death.
At the conclusion, Fr McGeehan thanked the Shantallow community for support and urged Daniel's young friends to seek help if needed, assuring them of availability in the parish.
