Historical Items from Portadown’s West End Bar Set for Auction
Rare historical items from Portadown’s West End Bar in Co Armagh, Northern Ireland, are to be auctioned by Victor Mee Auctions. The lots include the complete bar counter and back fitting, complete with an original snug, crafted in richly toned hardwood and featuring six functioning liquor casks. The installation is estimated to sell for up to €80,000.
Accompanying the bar fittings is a late 19th-century advertising mirror produced in 1872 by William W Cleland to promote Castle Bellingham Ales & Stouts. Measuring eight feet wide by four feet high, the mirror is estimated at upwards of €50,000. Both items originate from the West End Bar, which has traded continuously since the 19th century near Portadown’s former pork market.
The items form part of Victor Mee Auctions’ Wilson’s Yard Sale, scheduled online for March 18 and 19. Bryan Mee described the bar fittings as a 'museum-quality example of Ireland’s licensed trade heritage,' while Victor Mee noted their rarity after over 150 years of pub use.
In-person viewings are available from March 13 to 16 at Wilson’s Yard, 123 Hillsborough Road, Dromore, Co Down. The sale also includes inventory from Wilson’s Yard, an architectural salvage business, as owners Geoff and Rosy Wilson retire.
