Milford man Lee Doran runs for Ulster University Students' Union presidency
Lee Doran, a 22-year-old from Milford in Armagh, is campaigning to become President of the Ulster University Students’ Union. He currently serves as Vice-President at the Magee campus in Derry. If elected, he would represent students across the university's three campuses in Derry, Coleraine and Belfast.
Doran graduated last year with a degree in Business Computing. He has experience advocating for student issues at Magee and plans to extend this to all campuses. He maintains involvement in local football, soccer and Gaelic games in Derry.
His priorities include renters' rights, addressing high rental costs where students pay an average of £560 per month. He aims to lobby against extortionate rents and long contract lengths. Doran also seeks to freeze student fees, citing economic differences from mainland UK.
Doran supports promotion of the Irish language, building on achievements like signage in Students’ Union spaces and plans for part-time jobs for Irish language students. He commits to basing himself at Magee while visiting other campuses regularly.
Three candidates are contesting the presidency: Doran, Rimsha Lali and Emily Roberts. Voting opens online at www.uusu.org on March 3 and closes on March 5. Results are expected that evening.
