A charity event held in Gortin, County Tyrone, has raised £12,123 for Sarcoma UK. The 'Gala in the Glen' took place at Glenpark Estate in memory of Omagh businessman Gerard Campbell, who died on 30 May 2024, twelve weeks after being diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma.

Mr Campbell, originally from Castlederg, moved to Omagh at age 11. He opened Omagh's first video rental shop, Countdown, in the early 1980s, and later established GM Canopies. He was involved in various business ventures including retail, export and property development.

The event included entertainment from St Eugene's Brass and Reed Band, Dromore CCE, Jig Jazz, and The Bob Quick Band. A raffle was held with donated prizes. Sam Hackett from Sarcoma UK travelled from London to speak at the gala.

The family said they wanted to thank everyone who supported the event through sponsorship, donations, ticket purchases and attendance. The funds will go directly to Sarcoma UK to support its work providing information and support to people affected by sarcoma.

Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that develops in connective and supporting tissues such as bone, muscle, fat, nerves, tendons, cartilage and blood vessels.
