Abbey Villa Suffers Late Defeat to Dromara Village in Northern Amateur League
Abbey Villa lost 2-1 to Dromara Village in a Northern Amateur Football League Premier Division match at Millisle on Saturday. Captain Adam Arthurs scored for Villa in the 10th minute, but the visitors equalised from a corner with 15 minutes remaining and then scored the winner shortly after.
Villa entered the match with mixed form, having performed better in cup competitions than in the league this season. Dromara arrived having won five of their first six league games, with only one defeat.
The home side took the lead when a corner was delivered into the penalty area and Adam Arthurs reacted quickest to turn the ball in. Villa held the advantage at half-time despite Dromara enjoying more possession. Villa had chances to extend their lead, with Ryan Convery lively on the right and Scott Shannon later hitting a lob narrowly wide.
Dromara pressed after the break but found Villa's defence difficult to break down until the 75th minute. The equaliser came from a corner, with an unmarked visiting player scoring after being given too much room in the box. Minutes later, Villa lost possession in midfield, and a Dromara forward fired a low shot into the bottom corner.
Villa pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but could not find a way through the Dromara defence. The defeat leaves Villa with ground to make up in the league table, while Dromara strengthened their position near the top.
The match was played on a bright autumn afternoon, with the pitch in good condition. The referee was not named in reports.
