PSNI podcast episode highlights human trafficking in Northern Ireland
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has released the second episode of its podcast series 'PSNI Beyond the Badge', focusing on human trafficking and modern slavery. The episode, titled 'Human Trafficking: Recognising Exploitation', is available from Wednesday 14th October.
Host Lata Sharma speaks with Detective Inspector Rachel Miskelly and Detective Sergeant Andy Hull from Organised Crime Branch. They discuss the crime's presence in Northern Ireland, saying it is not confined to distant places but is very much active locally.
The episode references a case involving Caitlin Hanna and 12 other local women who were exploited by a network of older men. The officers praised the victims for cooperating with the investigation.
Detective Inspector Miskelly noted that several large operations have been conducted in recent years and that human trafficking is becoming more prevalent. She said the crime includes sexual exploitation, labour exploitation, and domestic servitude.
Detective Sergeant Hull advised the public to trust their instincts and report suspicious behaviour through phone or anonymous online reporting tools.
The episode coincides with Anti-Slavery Week, running from 12th to 18th October, during which PSNI is highlighting signs of modern slavery on social media.
Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Neill, Head of PSNI's Organised Crime Branch, said the police are keen to raise awareness of the issue. She appealed to anyone who suspects someone is being controlled to come forward, emphasising that victims will be listened to, respected, and believed.
