Bilingual street sign vandalised in Finaghy, second incident in days
A bilingual street sign in Finaghy has been vandalised, according to local representatives. The sign for Grangeville Gardens and its Irish translation was pulled from the ground and left on the road at Finaghy Crossroads. A local resident moved the sign to clear the carriageway.
Sinn Féin Councillor Natasha Brennan said the damage occurred overnight and created a hazard for motorists. She reported the incident to Belfast City Council and asked for repairs to be carried out as soon as possible.
Earlier in the week, another dual-language sign on Marcus Ward Street in the city centre was spray painted, obscuring the Irish wording. This is the second report of damage to a bilingual sign in Belfast within days.
Brennan described the vandalism as unacceptable and urged those responsible to stop. She said everyone in Finaghy should feel welcome and have their identity and language respected.
Belfast City Council has yet to confirm when the Grangeville Gardens sign will be restored.
