A 25-year-old man has appeared in court charged with multiple offences including assaulting police and possessing a fence post as an offensive weapon.

Matthew Anderson, of Heron Way in the Waterside area of Derry, faces four counts of assaulting police. He is also charged with disorderly behaviour in the Abercorn Road area of the cityside, two counts of attempted criminal damage, one assault on a man, and possession of an offensive weapon.

The two attempted criminal damage charges relate to a police vehicle and a shop.

At Derry Magistrates’ Court on Monday, defence solicitor Seamus Quigley indicated there would be no application for bail at this stage. He requested the case be adjourned until July 23, when a plea may be entered.

The court adjourned the matter and Anderson is expected to appear again at Bishop Street courthouse on that date.
