Fermanagh Family's Quest for Answers in Kelly Lynch Case Aired in RTÉ Documentary
A television documentary examining the death of County Fermanagh woman Kelly Lynch and her family's fight for a fresh investigation is set to air tonight.
The Girl in the Water follows the Lynch family of Lisnaskea as they challenge the official conclusion that the 23-year-old died by drowning after a night out in Monaghan town on St Patrick's weekend 2024.
Kelly Lynch's body was found in the Ulster Canal near Horseshoe Bridge on 17 March 2024. An Garda Síochána stated the death was not suspicious and the State pathologist recorded drowning as the cause.
Her parents, Julieanne and Sean Lynch, rejected that finding and commissioned independent post-mortem examinations. An expert report from a US-based pathologist stated Kelly likely died following a violent assault and should be classified as a homicide. A separate review by a former Northern Ireland pathologist described the evidence for drowning as tenuous.
These reports identified multiple injuries, with one recording 93 separate injuries. The family forwarded the findings to the State pathologist's office, which conducted a review but maintained the original conclusion. The pathologist said the injuries were consistent with a fall from height and that post-mortem damage was caused by insects and animals.
Julieanne Lynch said the documentary tracks the family's campaign for answers, clarity and accountability. She warned viewers it would be a difficult watch.
The programme features the parents recounting the moment they identified their daughter's body, with Sean Lynch saying they could only see her hair. Her mother said she felt her life before anyone else but was not allowed to hold her.
The family has sought meetings with the Irish Minister for Justice and supported calls for reforms in how unexplained deaths are handled. The documentary brings renewed attention to their campaign more than two years after Kelly's death.
The Girl in the Water airs on RTÉ One tonight at 9.35pm.
