A neighbourhood policing sergeant from Omagh is to be awarded the British Citizen Award (BCAc) for services to the community.

Sergeant Johnny Hamill, who has served with the Police Service of Northern Ireland for more than two decades, will collect the Medal of Honour at the Palace of Westminster on 23 July.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Commander Superintendent Pete Cunningham said the sergeant’s commitment to neighbourhood policing was outstanding and described him as a shining example of what the service stands for.

Sergeant Hamill personally learned sign language to better communicate with deaf and hearing-impaired residents. He also developed and delivered a programme titled Migrant In Us All, which draws parallels between modern-day migration and nineteenth-century Irish emigration, bringing together people from across the community to share experiences.

The British Citizen Award recognises individuals who make a positive impact on society through their work and voluntary efforts. Superintendent Cunningham said the honour highlighted the compassion, teamwork and resilience the sergeant brings to his role in making Omagh a safe and thriving community.
