The Tilery Nursing Home in County Fermanagh runs a programme of activities designed to keep residents engaged with their lifelong interests. Activity coordinators Savannah Scovell and Kechul Strathie oversee crafts, music, and animal visits as part of daily life at the 40-resident facility.

Ms Scovell, who has worked at the home for eight years, said the goal is to adapt residents' hobbies to what they can do now. The home keeps cows, a horse, and other animals because many residents are from farming backgrounds. A new bull was recently named by the residents.

Ms Strathie joined the activities team six years ago after starting as a carer. The pair say humour is also central, noting that residents enjoy a laugh. The team recently changed to bright yellow trousers, which prompted jokes from those they care for.

The home has seen some residents make notable progress. One woman who was thought to be non-verbal when she arrived now speaks single words, sings "Happy Birthday", and says "I love you" and her own name.

Weekly activity plans are drawn up but adjusted depending on residents' reactions. Future plans include visits from an accordion band and a pipe band, and a pen-pal scheme with another care home.

Staff are encouraged to spend time chatting with residents over tea. Ms Scovell believes building personal relationships helps residents feel comfortable raising concerns.

Resident Andrew Wilcox praised the coordinators' hard work and said he contributes ideas, enjoys dancing, and values the animals. Staff members describe the home as a family-like environment.

Ms Scovell will begin university in September but continue working weekends, leaving Ms Strathie to lead the activities programme.
