Irvinestown signs temporarily change to Lowtherstown for festival
Several street signs in Irvinestown, County Fermanagh, have been temporarily changed to read Lowtherstown ahead of the annual Lady of the Lake Festival this July. The change recalls the village's original name from its founding in 1618 during the Plantation of Ulster.
Now in its 47th year, the festival adopts the theme "A Journey Through Time" and will run over nine days. Organiser Joe Mahon explained that the theme was chosen to encourage reflection on the town's origins and evolution, with events tracing local history from prehistoric times to the present.
A time capsule will be buried beside the Lady of the Lake statue, while a fancy dress parade, children's activities, and heritage displays are also planned. The Sunday truck convoy, a long-standing highlight, is expected to draw large crowds. Mahon said he hopes to surpass the previous record of over 600 decorated lorries, setting a target of 1,000 this year, citing a drop in diesel prices.
Mahon stated that the festival unites the local community across religious backgrounds and attracts tourists. He expressed confidence that the temporary signage would not cause confusion, describing it as a way to prompt conversation about the town's past.
Other programmed events include donkey rides, traditional craft demonstrations, family fun days, live music, sporting competitions, and community fundraisers. Mahon said the event's enduring success depends on strong community backing and offers attractions for all ages.
