CAFRE opens applications for Dutch dairy innovation visit
Dairy farmers in Northern Ireland can apply for a three-day innovation visit to the Netherlands this September, organised by the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE). The trip, from 7 to 9 September 2026, is part of the Farming for Sustainability – Innovation Scheme under the Sustainable Agriculture Programme.
Participants will visit Wageningen University and Research, De Marke’s dairy research farm, and two commercial dairy farms. The focus is on practical approaches to improve soil health, increase carbon storage, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining productive dairy systems.
At Wageningen, farmers will learn about soil structure, biodiversity, and carbon monitoring tools. The visit includes a demonstration of a portable infrared soil scanner that provides real-time on-farm soil analysis, enabling precise nutrient management.
De Marke farm will showcase long-term research on soil health, nutrient efficiency, and environmental impact. The commercial farms, one conventional and one organic, will demonstrate techniques such as using clover and multispecies swards, better nutrient management, and building soil organic matter.
A total of 20 places are available. Applicants must be 18 or over, not in full-time education, and from a farm business. Preference goes to those meeting selection criteria and who have not attended a previous Innovation Visit.
The programme covers setup, accommodation, travel, and meals. Participants must pay for additional costs like farm relief and travel insurance. Those selected must attend pre- and post-trip training.
Applications close at 4:00pm on Friday 10 July 2026. Forms are on the CAFRE website, and inquiries can be directed to KT Admin on 028 944 26790 or kt.admin@daera-ni.gov.uk.
