CAFRE Invites Applications for Beef and Dairy Innovation Farms Network
The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise has opened applications for seven beef farms, including suckler and finishing units, and seven dairy farms to join its Innovation Farms network. These sites will host farmer visits to display sustainable practices tied to the Sustainable Agriculture Programme.
Selected farms must manage eight to twelve group visits annually, each with five to twenty-five participants. The programme promotes adoption of new farming methods across the sector.
Applicants face a competitive selection process prioritising environmental improvements, increased productivity, resilience, supply chain efficiency and One Health principles. Farms need to meet baseline standards in every category. Those without Officially Tuberculosis Free status qualify for applications but enter a reserve list until compliance.
A panel inspects shortlisted farms. CAFRE provides technologists, advisers, data analysis, testing and specialist speakers. Hosts receive 786 pounds per visit, along with assistance for preparation and event management.
Kenneth Johnston, the Innovation Farm Programme manager, urged eligible farmers to apply online via the CAFRE website under business support and Knowledge Transfer Programmes before the 6 March 2026 deadline at 4pm.
The network operates within the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Farming for Sustainability Innovation Scheme, which funds knowledge transfer in Northern Ireland agriculture.
