Racist graffiti remains on display in the Bowtown estate in Newtownards, two weeks after it first appeared, prompting criticism from elected representatives and calls for its immediate removal.

The slogans, including the phrase “whites only,” were painted on two gable walls along Abbott Drive. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is treating the incident as a racially motivated hate crime.

The graffiti emerged against a backdrop of unrest following a knife attack on Stephen Ogilvie in north Belfast on 8 June. A banner referencing that attack was put up in the Movilla Street area of Newtownards but was taken down on Wednesday night.

Strangford MP Jim Shannon said he had contacted the PSNI and Ards and North Down Borough Council after residents complained. He noted the council had indicated it must ensure the safety of any workers sent to clean the walls.

Alliance representatives also called for action. Strangford MLA Nick Mathison said children walking to school were being exposed to hate messages and urged the PSNI, Housing Executive and council to work together. Councillor Vicky Moore said the material had no place in the community and should be removed at the earliest opportunity.

The Housing Executive, which owns the properties, said it is actively engaging with statutory partners and the local community. A police spokesperson said officers are continuing to engage with local representatives and agencies and appealed for witnesses or footage. The council stated the graffiti is not on its property and that it has been liaising with other bodies.
