NI Water urges reservoir safety as wildfire risk grows
With warmer weather forecast, Northern Ireland Water is urging the public to observe a ban on barbecues, open fires and water-based activities at all its reservoirs and publicly accessible sites.
Senior facilities manager Patricia McKee said the risk of wildfires becomes much more severe as temperatures climb. She asked everyone to respect the prohibition, which remains in effect until further notice.
The ban covers all NI Water locations, whether in use or not. Swimming, diving and paddle boarding are all prohibited. The company stressed that reservoirs are working sites with hidden dangers, including strong currents, cold water shock and difficulty exiting the water.
The warning follows significant wildfire damage at Silent Valley Mountain Park earlier this year, and recent reports of people entering the water at Lough Shannagh, Silent Valley, Ben Crom and Spelga Dam.
Anyone who sees a fire should move to a safe place and call the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service on 999. Deliberate fire-setting is a criminal offence and should be reported to the PSNI.
McKee said the message is simple: enjoy these spaces safely, follow the advisory signage and treat the waterways with care and respect.
