NI Water is warning the public not to endanger themselves at its reservoirs and water infrastructure sites for the sake of social media posts.

Videos shared online show people entering prohibited areas and standing near sheer drops, the company said. Some of these locations have fast-flowing water and water levels that can change suddenly.

A spokesperson for NI Water said that a worrying trend has emerged on social media of people taking significant risks by entering reservoir infrastructure areas. The company is appealing to all visitors to act safely and responsibly, to respect warning signs, and to stay out of restricted areas.

Locations displaying "No Trespassing" signs are out of bounds to the public because they are not safe. Some of these areas are monitored by CCTV, and footage of trespassing incidents will be captured and passed to the PSNI.

NI Water said that no social media post, video, or photograph is worth serious injury or loss of life. Reckless behaviour can also place NI Water staff and Northern Ireland’s emergency and rescue services at risk if a rescue operation becomes necessary.

The company reiterated that all water activities are strictly prohibited at its reservoirs. Parents and guardians are being urged to speak to young people about the dangers of trespassing on reservoir infrastructure, where hidden hazards, deep water, and steep, slippery banks can result in death or serious injury.

The public is advised to stay safe by keeping well back from sheer drops and reservoir infrastructure, and never to put themselves at risk to capture or post content online. Anyone who sees a person in difficulty should call 999 or 112 immediately and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service if the incident is inland.
