Omagh theatre charity readies first original production since founder’s death
Skyzdalimit, an Omagh-based theatre charity for learning-disabled and autistic actors, is preparing to stage its first original production since the death of founder Pearse McCloskey nearly one year ago.
The play, titled ‘Coast to Coast’, will be performed at the Strule Arts Centre on June 26. The single performance has already sold out.
Chairperson Sheena McCooey wrote the script and said the cast were involved in developing their own characters, giving them a sense of ownership over the production.
The plot follows seven childhood friends from Donegal who reunite for a road trip to Cork, prompted by a friend’s wedding. Traveling in a battered van, old tensions surface before the group reaffirms their bond.
Sheena McCooey said there was uncertainty about the group’s future after McCloskey’s death but that members resolved to continue his work. She noted his influence remains strong within the organisation.
The production is directed by Mary McCooey, with choreography by Holly Clements. Beragh-based television producer Kieran Grimes, whose credits include EastEnders and Fair City, contributed suggestions to the script.
Sheena McCooey praised the volunteers and committee, describing them as essential to the charity’s operations. She said the cast brings a joyful quality to the stage that audiences respond to strongly.
