The Alley Theatre in Strabane will remain closed until early 2027 due to water damage, Derry City and Strabane District Council has confirmed. The venue shut in September 2025 after a substantial leak, initially expected to last six months.

The council said ongoing investigations revealed the need for an extended programme of repairs, forcing all programmed events for the remainder of 2026 to be impacted. Officers are in discussions with promoters and event organisers to arrange alternatives, including using other venues across the council area or rescheduling where possible. Ticket holders will be offered refunds.

Ciara McCay, director of the Strabane Drama Festival, described the prolonged closure as a significant blow. She said the lack of access to the arts for such a long period is damaging for the town, its community organisations and audiences. The annual drama festival, which would have marked its 40th year, has been postponed. Organisers hope to host the celebration at the Alley in March 2027.

Mayor Grace Uí Niallais acknowledged the disappointment for audiences, artists and promoters, and said the council is committed to supporting them during the closure. She said the Alley is a valued cultural asset and the works are necessary.

Independent councillor Raymond Barr voiced concern about the timeline and cost of repairs, suggesting a potential disparity in the council's approach to facilities in Derry and more rural areas.

A detailed report on the works programme will go before the council's Business and Culture Committee. Further updates will be provided to the public as they become available.
