The Western Health and Social Care Trust is looking for people to provide short break foster care for children and young people with disabilities.

The new service was launched at an event at the Waterfoot Hotel in Derry/Londonderry on 17 June 2026. It forms part of a regional scheme offering planned, regular breaks to families.

Maeve Campbell, social work manager for short breaks at the Western Trust, outlined how the service benefits both children and their parents. Children can enjoy new experiences, build confidence, develop independence and form positive relationships in a safe setting. Parents and carers get time to rest and attend to other family commitments.

Ms Campbell emphasised that the trust needs compassionate and committed individuals who can provide welcoming, nurturing care. She said such support can make a meaningful difference in the lives of children with disabilities and their families.

Anyone interested in offering a short break in their home can visit the regional adoption and fostering website at adoptionandfostercare.hscni.net or call 0800 0720 137.
