Kesh Care Home Marks Learning Disability Week with Music and Dancing
Residents at a care home in Kesh, County Fermanagh, celebrated Learning Disability Week earlier this month with a series of events including music, dancing, and an afternoon tea.
The event on Tuesday June 9 saw 14 residents from Kesh Creamery and nearby Mantlin Court join together. Staff members also took part, dressing in western-themed costumes for the occasion.
Local entertainer Paddy Treacy performed for the residents, who sang along and requested songs. Erica Johnston, team leader at Kesh Creamery, said the clients were singing and dancing throughout the visit.
Preparations for the celebration began weeks in advance, with residents decorating their home with banners, painted windows, balloons, and themed displays. A marquee was set up for the day.
The afternoon included a tea party with themed cupcakes and cowboy decorations. Further events planned for the week included an ice cream van visit, a pygmy goat experience, a candy floss day, and more dress-up activities.
Ms Johnston said that the residents held monthly meetings where they discussed and planned activities they wanted to do. This celebration was their idea, and they identified Paddy Treacy as a special guest.
She noted that Learning Disability Week serves as a reminder that a disability is just one part of a person's identity, and that people with learning disabilities bring joy and inspiration.
