Bloody Sunday victim and justice campaigner Mickey Bridge dies at 79
A man who was shot and wounded on Bloody Sunday and later became a prominent campaigner for justice has died aged 79.
Mickey Bridge was 25 when a soldier from the British Parachute Regiment shot him in the leg during an anti-internment demonstration in Derry's Bogside on 30 January 1972. He was one of 28 people shot by soldiers that day; 14 were killed.
Tony Doherty, chairperson of the Bloody Sunday Trust, said Bridge was involved in the campaign for truth and justice from its earliest days, walking the streets and knocking on doors to gather support. He described Bridge as playing an important role throughout the years of campaigning.
Doherty extended the trust's condolences to Bridge's wife and family, adding 'may he rest in peace'.
