Seán Quinn helps mark 50th anniversary of Teemore primary school
St Mary’s Primary School in Teemore marked its 50th anniversary with a ceremony that included a tree planting attended by former local businessman Seán Quinn.
Mr Quinn, who will turn 80 later this year, addressed the gathering and assisted pupils with planting the tree. He described the invitation as an honour and said it was pleasing that people in the area still held him in regard.
He spoke about the reciprocal relationship between himself and the community, noting that he had provided jobs locally and that the community had contributed to his past wealth.
Commenting on changes in the area, Mr Quinn observed that sports participation in Teemore had grown considerably. He said the football field at the school was now regularly used by both boys and girls, a contrast to his own youth when there were no organised games for girls in camogie or football.
Asked how he found time for such events, Mr Quinn replied that he was approaching 80 and had little else occupying his schedule. He acknowledged that he feels his age, particularly after a fall at his home around six months ago.
While descending a hill after the planting, Mr Quinn stepped in dog excrement and was seen cleaning his shoe. He made a light-hearted remark about claiming expenses for the mishap.
