Three RAFA branches mark 80th anniversaries with fundraising awards
Three branches of the Royal Air Forces Association in Northern Ireland gathered at Carrickfergus Golf Club to mark 80 years of service. The event brought together members from Carrickfergus, Bangor and Newtownards, and Causeway Coast branches.
Wing Commander Noel Williams, chairman of the Carrickfergus branch, welcomed guests including Co Antrim Deputy Lieutenant Jackie Stewart, RAFA Secretary General Nick Bunting, former Officer Commanding 502 (Ulster) Squadron Wing Commander Steven McCleery, Officer Commanding Northern Ireland Air Training Corps Wing Commander Chris Hodges, and Alliance MLA Stewart Dickson.
Carrickfergus branch was recognised as the top fundraiser among all UK RAFA branches for the 2025 Wings Appeal, raising £30,000. Mrs Stewart highlighted that the branch has raised over £700,000 for the charity over the past 20 years. The Causeway Coast branch received a certificate for raising £7,000 during the most recent Portrush Airshow. Michael Morrison of the Bangor and Newtownards branch was presented with a Safeguarding Award for his extensive casework supporting veterans' wellbeing.
Mr Williams said the branches work to support beneficiaries through volunteering, fundraising, befriending the lonely and providing wellbeing opportunities. Branch President Charlie Magill added that the 80th anniversary is an occasion to reaffirm the commitment to welfare services for serving and former RAF members and their families. The Carrickfergus branch meets monthly on the first Tuesday at 7.30pm at the golf club, and invites former RAF personnel to join.
