Fresh Odour Complaints at Killeeshil GAA Grounds Prompt Stormont Debate
A Stormont debate has heard renewed frustration over a long-standing odour problem affecting a Tyrone GAA club and its surrounding community. Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Colm Gildernew told the Assembly that residents are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of resolution.
The issue centres on a mushroom compost factory operated by Sawgrass Substrates Ltd near Killeeshil. Killeeshil GAA club said the smell was again present during a recent under-14 girls championship semi-final and an underage boys training session at its grounds. The odour persisted for prolonged periods, causing concern among players, parents, coaches, and spectators from both the home and visiting clubs.
Local residents have raised the problem regularly since concerns were first voiced in 2019. Two years ago, several hundred people staged a protest to draw attention to the issue. A similar demonstration was held last year outside the offices of Mid Ulster District Council, with calls for local politicians to intervene.
During the Stormont debate, Mr Gildernew acknowledged that the Northern Ireland Environment Agency was expected to review the situation but said communities were weary of a pattern that repeats without meaningful change.
The club stated that the incident was not isolated and that similar issues arise at its grounds on a regular basis, affecting both sporting events and local residents.
Sawgrass Substrates Ltd was contacted for comment but did not respond.
