Manufacturing Strategy Needed for NI's £6bn Sector, Says MLA
Alliance Economy spokesperson David Honeyford has called for Northern Ireland to adopt a dedicated manufacturing strategy, stating that its absence is holding back a sector that contributes over £6 billion annually and supports nearly 100,000 jobs.
The Lagan Valley MLA said a comprehensive framework is required to address skills shortages, improve energy competitiveness, boost exports, and remove barriers to growth. He identified planning reform and urgent action on wastewater connection constraints as immediate priorities, noting both are currently blocking investment and expansion.
Honeyford emphasised that cross-border collaboration with the Republic of Ireland on skills, energy infrastructure, and supply chain opportunities would be beneficial. He pointed to the Republic’s success in manufacturing, where the sector is recognised as central to economic growth and regional prosperity, as a benchmark for creating conditions that allow businesses to invest and grow.
The manufacturing industry is not a relic of the past but a foundation for future prosperity, Honeyford argued, adding that it is time to recognise its opportunities to build a better future for everyone.
