Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins activated new temporary 20mph speed limit signs outside St Oliver’s Primary School in Carrickrovaddy, Cullyhanna.

The school is one of 40 included in the third tranche of the scheme.

When complete, the scheme will bring the total number of schools with part-time 20mph limits in Northern Ireland to 273.

All 40 schools in the current tranche are scheduled to become operational by the start of the new school term in September.

The Minister stated that road safety is a priority and that safety around schools is paramount, noting that children and young people are among the most vulnerable road users.

She said the measures target rural schools often located on roads subject to the national speed limit.

Mrs Donaghy, principal of St Oliver’s Primary School, said the safety of pupils is the school’s top priority, especially at the start and end of the school day.

The Minister also said her department is reviewing speed limits, considering permanent 20mph zones, and examining responses to a consultation on safer journeys to school by bus.

Additional funding has been committed for advertising campaigns focused on driver behaviour and motorcyclist safety.
