An SDLP MLA has urged the Health Minister to introduce a 24-hour 111 non-emergency service by September 2026.

Maureen McLaughlin, the Foyle representative, said the system would triage patients by phone or online and direct them to appropriate care.

She told Stormont that urgent care services across Northern Ireland face sustained pressure, with staff at Altnagelvin Hospital managing overcrowding and rising demand.

McLaughlin noted that staff continue to deliver care despite difficult conditions and workforce shortages.

The MLA highlighted conversations with constituents, patients and hospital workers that show the impact of these pressures.

A motion calling on Minister Mike Nesbitt to bring forward proposals for the service passed at Stormont on Monday.
