Kilkeel RNLI Crew Enters Soapbox Race at Stormont Estate
Crew members from Kilkeel RNLI lifeboat station built a soapbox go-kart for the Red Bull Soapbox Belfast race. The kart replicates their Shannon class vessel Bobby Cameron 13-57. They named it 13-57 ½.
The team applied to participate in February and received acceptance last month. They constructed the kart over the past month using a steel chassis, go-kart wheels and an aluminium frame covered in Correx board. Local business Get Print donated the Correx board. The crew purchased or received donations for other materials.
The gravity-powered race features 40 teams on a purpose-built course at Stormont Estate. The event occurs on Sunday with gates opening at 1pm and races starting at 2pm.
