SDLP Representatives Raise Safety Issues at Newcastle Tesco Junction
SDLP MLA Colin McGrath and Cllr Laura Devlin have raised safety concerns at the junction on Castlewellan Road leading to the Tesco store in Newcastle. Local residents contacted them about near misses and congestion at the location.
McGrath noted frustration among daily users of the junction due to safety risks. Drivers indicate too early on Castlewellan Road, causing confusion between turns into the Burrendale estate and the Tesco entrance. This creates risks for drivers and pedestrians.
Traffic exiting the Tesco site causes delays. Residents state the layout no longer suits current traffic levels. Pedestrian safety draws particular concern in the busy area.
Devlin called for a fresh assessment by the Department for Infrastructure. She noted prior examinations but stressed the need for updates given ongoing complaints.
Devlin added that traffic volume from the privately owned Tesco site raises public road safety issues. Residents worry the junction could become a site for accidents.
The representatives plan to contact the Department for Infrastructure. They seek details on recent traffic assessments and push for new safety measures.
