Ernest Rutledge, 77, of Dernavogy Road in Brookeborough received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, at Enniskillen Magistrates Court. The court banned him from holding a firearms certificate for eight years. He pleaded guilty to failing to comply with a firearms certificate condition on July 22, 2025.

The charge related to a .22 rifle registered to Rutledge. Police found the rifle missing from his home after the shooting the next day. The weapon appeared at the scene in Maguiresbridge where Vanessa Whyte, 45, and her children James, 14, and Sara, 13, died from gunshot wounds.

Ian Rutledge, Vanessa's husband and father of the children, died five days later from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. Vanessa and Sara died at the Drummeer Road home. James died later that day at South West Acute Hospital.

District Judge Alana McSorley noted the custody threshold passed but cited Rutledge's guilty plea, remorse, and lack of further firearms access as mitigating factors. Rutledge held licences for three firearms, including the rifle, a shotgun, and an air rifle. He no longer possesses any firearms.

Regina Whyte, sister of Vanessa and aunt of James and Sara, submitted a victim impact statement. She stated her family serves a life sentence from the loss. She added that the triple grave shows the damage firearms inflict on human life.

Family members of Vanessa Whyte attended the hearing.
