Maguiresbridge Gun Case Advances with Victim Impact Statements
Enniskillen Magistrates Court is handling a case connected to deaths in Maguiresbridge. Ernest Rutledge, 77, from Dernavogy Road in Brookeborough, faces a charge of failing to properly store a firearm and ammunition on July 22 last year. The weapon was used the next day.
Emergency services attended Crummeer Road in Maguiresbridge on the morning of July 23. They found victims in different parts of the house. Vanessa Whyte, 45, and Sara Rutledge died at the scene. James Rutledge, 13, went to hospital and later died from injuries.
Ian Rutledge carried out the attack and shot himself. He survived initially and received treatment at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. He died several days later.
A 999 call came from Sara Rutledge's phone, but no one spoke.
Vanessa Whyte had reported domestic abuse by Ian Rutledge, including an attempt to strangle her. Both Sara and James attended Enniskillen Royal Grammar School and told friends about their father's actions.
The court recently heard that Victim Impact Statements are being prepared.
