Larne's Latharna House Demolition Set to Start Later This Month
Demolition of Latharna House in Larne will begin later this month. Communities Minister Gordon Lyons confirmed the Northern Ireland Housing Executive appointed B Small Contracts for the work. The 16-storey tower block in the Riverdale area has stood unoccupied since its last tenant moved in 2023.
Latharna House forms the final of three NIHE high-rise flats in the area for removal. Gardenmore House and Shane House already came down. Built in the early 1970s using a Bison concrete system, it held 90 flats.
Contractors take site control on 18 May 2026 for preparatory steps. A floor-by-floor mechanical deconstruction method suits the site's location near the A8 ring road and adjacent properties. The process should last about 52 weeks, subject to weather and conditions.
Paul Isherwood, NIHE Director of Asset Management, stated safety controls and environmental measures go in first. He noted the aim to limit disruption for residents and businesses and urged the public to follow site safety advice.
Micheal O’Rourke, Contracts Manager at B Small Contracts, said the team brings experience in high-rise demolitions. Priorities include safety, efficiency, and minimal community impact while meeting all requirements.
Minister Lyons noted the building's long skyline presence and resident memories. He welcomed the tenant rehousing and progress, adding the site will remodel for local benefit after clearance.
Roy McClean, NIHE Assistant Area Manager for Mid and East Antrim, called it the end of an era. The post-demolition site plans call for landscaping for community use.
