PSNI Chief to Meet Support Group Over Retired Officers' Withdrawal from Omagh Inquiry
Retired police officers involved in the aftermath of the 1998 Omagh bombing have suspended their cooperation with the public inquiry until trauma-informed welfare and legal support is provided. The Omagh Police Support Group stated that participants face significant pressures including retraumatisation and uncertainty over legal protections from revisiting events over 25 years old.
PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher confirmed at a Policing Board meeting that he will meet the support group. He also plans to meet the family of a retired officer who died suddenly after being expected to give evidence. Boutcher stressed the need for proper legal and welfare support for those assisting inquiries.
UUP MLA and Policing Board member Alan Chambers raised concerns about mental health pressures on retired officers helping with Omagh bombing investigations.
The inquiry stated that trauma-informed practices are in place from the start. Emotional support services are provided through the WAVE Trauma Centre for all potential witnesses. It is working with the PSNI to arrange suitable support for officers giving evidence.
