PEACEPLUS ASPIRE Programme Links Northern Ireland Schools with Neighbours Across Border
The Education Authority in Northern Ireland coordinates the PEACEPLUS ASPIRE programme. Partners include Léargas, Early Years - the organisation for young children, National Childhood Network, and the Fermanagh Trust. The Special EU Programmes Body manages PEACEPLUS funding for the initiative. It connects children and young people from varied backgrounds through direct contact.
Pupils from St Mary’s Primary School in Northern Ireland visited Enniskillen Castle with peers from Fairgreen National School in January. Junior classes examined traditional toys and local Fermanagh history. Senior classes studied conflict, colonisation, civil rights, and historical movements. In February, the groups discussed teamwork principles and built bridges in STEM sessions. They played tactical games requiring collaboration.
Students from Scoil Mhuire Gleneely and Scoil Treasa Naofa completed introductory sessions with icebreakers, games, art, sports, and music activities. They agreed on a group contract. The partnership features cross-border visits, creative arts days, and links with Malin GAA and Gleneely Colts. Pupils plan litter clean-ups in Malin and Gleneely areas. Teacher Karen McDermott from Scoil Mhuire Gleneely stated pupils show improved attendance, positive attitudes toward learning, and greater confidence.
Gaelscoil na gCeithre Máistrí and Scoil Naomh Chaitríona held an intercultural day in Ballyshannon in March. Stands represented Hungary, Great Britain, India, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Poland, Ireland, and Ukraine. Displays included food and traditions. Pupils performed songs in Irish and Polish, including the Polish national anthem. Classes staged dances. Aoife Coen, lead teacher at Scoil Naomh Chaitríona, addressed the group. McDermott noted staff benefits from sharing expertise on autism classes and inclusive practices.
The programme supports skills development, confidence growth, and active community roles. Partnerships promote understanding of neurodiversity, special educational needs, and language diversity.
