Police Probe Car Arson on Sandbank Road Amid Local Wildfire Response
Police in Derry City received a report at 12.05am on Tuesday of two cars set on fire outside a property on Sandbank Road. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and extinguished the blazes. Firefighters ruled the ignition deliberate.
A third vehicle on the street had petrol poured on it but did not catch fire. Officers described two suspects in dark tracksuits who fled towards Lenamore Road. Police requested information from anyone with footage or who saw suspicious activity in the area. Reports can be made on 101 quoting reference 19 of 28/04/26 or online.
At the same time, the Fire and Rescue Service continued operations on Sandbank Road in Hilltown. Around 50 firefighters worked to contain a wildfire front over 500m long. This followed a separate blaze in the Ballagh Road area of the Mourne Mountains, declared extinguished at 10.08am that Tuesday.
The Mourne fire started at 6.44pm on Saturday 25 April and covered 1,000 hectares at its peak. It involved over 80 firefighters. Investigators determined that fire was also deliberate.
