Dozens of Lamb Carcasses Dumped on Country Lane Near Claudy
A local woman found about a dozen lamb carcasses piled at a gate on a country lane near Claudy in County Londonderry early on Sunday. Lisa Houston discovered the animals during her walk. She noted they were not there the previous day.
Houston described the find as shocking and upsetting. She said the longer the carcasses remain the greater the health hazard they pose. She farms locally and farms near the site.
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs is investigating. A department spokesperson stated animal by-products pose risks to public and animal health. Farmers must dispose of animals legally and sustainably.
Derry City and Strabane District Council confirmed awareness of the incident. The council is arranging disposal. A council spokesperson urged anyone with information to contact them to identify those responsible for prosecution and cost recovery.
Local farmer Thomas Conway said the lambs appeared about a week old and not stillborn based on photos. He called the dumping reprehensible. Conway farms near the location.
Responsibility for fallen livestock disposal falls to the owner if known, otherwise the landowner. On public roads it rests with the local council if ownership is undetermined.
