Archbishop Eamon Martin Calls for Hope Amid Global Conflicts in Easter Message
Archbishop Eamon Martin, the Derry-born Primate of All Ireland, delivered an Easter message addressing ongoing wars. He described recent conflicts as dark clouds overshadowing spring's promise of hope.
Martin noted the impact of fighting in the Middle East and Ukraine. He stated that bombs and sirens from those areas cannot be heard in Ireland but their effects include rising prices, unstable markets, and growing despair.
The Archbishop criticised modern warfare for causing indiscriminate civilian deaths. He said claims of clinical attacks are an illusion and that destroying infrastructure like roads, bridges, water, and fuel stations spreads fear among populations.
Martin asserted that war corrupts, depresses, and represents a defeat for humanity. He acknowledged the difficulty of finding hope in damaged hospitals, schools, or among displaced families who have lost possessions or loved ones.
He pointed to Easter's promise that Christ overcame evil. Martin called on Christians in Ireland to witness this message by promoting love, forgiveness, healing, reconciliation, and hope for renewal.
The Primate extended Easter greetings in Irish and English.
