An exhibition based on Marita Conlon-McKenna's book Under the Hawthorn Tree opened at the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh, County Tyrone. The display brings to life the story of three children during the mid-19th century Irish famine.

Pupils from St Eithne's School in Derry formed the first school group to visit. The P7 class had just finished reading the book before the trip.

Marita Conlon-McKenna attended the exhibition. She noted that current world events give the story of famine and displacement added relevance today. She described the display as exceeding her expectations in design and elements.

Victoria Miller, senior curator of history at the museum, stated that the past offers lessons for current lives and future planning. This marks the first new exhibit at the Ulster American Folk Park in four years.

A central feature is a large hawthorn tree sculpture woven from willow branches by Bob Johnston, the museum's willow weaver.

Conlon-McKenna's book appears on school curriculums in multiple countries and languages.
