Special school summer schemes in Northern Ireland will operate this year. Education Minister Paul Givan and Health Minister Mike Nesbitt made the announcement following talks between their departments and the Education Authority.

Nursing support from the Department of Health will be provided at each scheme location. The ministers confirmed the plan on Friday.

That day, an Alliance Party petition to recall the Assembly received support from Sinn Féin, SDLP and TUV to address the schemes.

Paul Givan said the schemes assist children and young people with complex needs and offer families ongoing care. He added that the Education Authority will coordinate with special school principals on planning.

Mike Nesbitt stated nursing support will be available at every site. He noted ongoing work with partners for a year-round health care model in special schools to address complex medical needs.

West Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Danny Baker welcomed the decision as relief for parents and children. He requested explanations from the ministers on the initial decision and assurances it will not recur.

People Before Profit West Belfast MLA Gerry Carroll welcomed the outcome but said the earlier uncertainty caused distress to families.
