TUV Calls for Stormont Action After Olympics Bans Males from Women's Events
The International Olympic Committee will require screening for the SRY gene in athletes seeking to compete in women's events at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The gene, typically on the Y chromosome, triggers male sex development. This ends prior allowances for males identifying as female in women's sports.
TUV equality spokeswoman Ann McClure welcomed the Olympic policy change. She called it a wake-up call for politicians in Northern Ireland.
McClure stated that TUV revealed Executive funding under a violence-against-women scheme went to groups including males identifying as female. She noted spending data collected categories of men, women, and a third group described as neither.
The department overseeing the scheme has joint DUP leadership, McClure said. She added that the notion males born male can become female affects distribution of funds meant to address violence against women.
McClure argued that funding groups aiming to place males in female-only spaces does not enhance women's safety.
