Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly raised objections to the current transgender toilet policy at Stormont. TUV MLA Timothy Gaston stated that the Equality Commission considers the policy's guidance outdated. He noted the commission's letter to the Assembly Commission, which oversees Stormont buildings, points to recent court and tribunal rulings from mid-2021 onward.

Gaston said the commission advised the Assembly Commission to obtain its own legal advice. The policy permits access to female facilities by individuals born male who identify as female. Gaston called for a change to align with biological sex.

DUP MLA Peter Martin asked Sinn Fein MLA Sinead Ennis, who represents the Assembly Commission, whether ladies' toilets in Assembly buildings should be restricted to those born female. Ennis responded that she would not provide a personal opinion and that the matter remains under review.

DUP MLA Jonathan Buckley inquired if the Assembly Commission received legal advice following the UK Supreme Court's April ruling that 'woman' in equality law excludes transwomen. Ennis declined to discuss legal advice.

In reply to Gaston, Ennis remarked that members who had not previously supported women's rights now position themselves as their advocates. She added that she has never felt unsafe in the building as a woman who works there.

The Assembly Commission includes representatives from Northern Ireland's five main parties and is chaired by Edwin Poots.
