Fermanagh GAA Pioneer Pat Chapman Dies Aged in Newtownbutler
Patrick Chapman, a prominent member of Fermanagh's GAA community, died on March 25 at Tilery Nursing Home. He resided in Newtownbutler.
Chapman originally came from County Cavan and settled in Newtownbutler with his wife Anne and their children. He served Newtownbutler First Fermanaghs, the county's oldest GAA club.
He supported inclusive GAA initiatives across communities and for people with disabilities by helping establish the Dr. Croke games in Fermanagh. A year later, he backed women's football within the GAA despite opposition.
Chapman contributed to the Ladies Gaelic Football Association and aided First Fermanaghs in securing multiple county championships plus an Ulster title in 2012.
He also worked as a community activist, assisted Clones Athletic Club, and organized Community Games events in Fermanagh.
Chapman is survived by children Therese, Darren, Morgan, Garvan, John Paul, and Pauric, brother Terry, eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. His wife Anne and daughters Annamarie and Ciara predeceased him, along with siblings May and Billy.
His body will lie in repose at the Adoration Chapel in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Newtownbutler, on Friday from 5pm to 8pm. The funeral mass follows on Saturday at 11am.
