Fermanagh Family Faces Motor Neurone Disease Diagnosis
George Remedios, owner of a climbing gym in Enniskillen, Fermanagh, received a Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis on January 2 after experiencing muscle twitches and weight loss. The symptoms began last year during a flood at his gym, Ennis Rock. He and his partner Donna paid for private care to avoid a five-year public wait for a neurologist. The couple learned the results via video call in Omagh.
Remedios lives in Enniskillen with Donna and their daughters Milena, 18, and Flavia, 16. The family moved there from England to operate the gym. Remedios stated he plans a long fight against the disease to witness his daughters' milestones. Milena starts university in Loughborough, and Flavia takes GCSE exams.
Milena organised a 10k run in Enniskillen and collected more than £5,500 for the MND Association. She noted the funds can support researcher conferences or buy voice preservation technology and iPads for patients. Remedios takes medication and will join clinical trials.
Remedios reported cases of others living with MND for 10 to 12 years, including one using a stick and with arm weakness. The family booked a Greece holiday to create memories.
